Alabama Barker, the 17-year-old daughter of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, has been accused of blackfishing after she posted a TikTok video in which she appears with a darker complexion and curly hair.
In the video, Barker lip-syncs to a song while wearing a black wig, a black, white, and red racer jacket, and a variety of jewelry. She also has on a full face of makeup, including a bold lip liner and false eyelashes.
Some fans took to the comments section to accuse Barker of blackfishing, a term used to describe when someone who is not Black uses makeup, hairstyles, or other physical features to appear Black.
“This is blackfishing,” one user wrote. “She’s not Black.”
Another user added, “She’s trying so hard to be Black.”
Barker has not responded to the accusations of blackfishing.
This is not the first time that Barker has been accused of appropriating Black culture. In 2020, she was criticized for wearing a Native American headdress to a party.
Blackfishing is a serious issue that has been gaining attention in recent years. It is important to be aware of the harmful effects of blackfishing and to call it out when we see it.
