COIMBATORE: The police have revealed the reason behind the suicide of Coimbatore Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) S Vijayakumar, who shot himself with his service pistol at his official residence on Wednesday morning.
Coimbatore range deputy inspector general of police C Vijayakumar, who shot himself dead on Friday morning, was suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) cum depression, a police officer said citing a doctor who had treated the IPS officer.
The Times of India quoted ADGP Arun saying, “Depression was the reason for Vijayakumar’s suicide,” additional director general of police (ADGP -law&order) A Arun said. Vijayakumar, 47, shot himself dead in front of his camp office in Red Fields near Race Course on Friday morning. “He (the DIG) had been taking medicines for depression for the last few years. I spoke to the doctor who had treated the DIG. I came to know that Vijayakumar had informed the doctor four days ago that his depression level had increased drastically. The doctor gave him some new medicines to control depression. His family moved to Coimbatore four days ago after he developed severe depression, ”
ADGP Arun told reporters after paying homage to Vijayakumar in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.”There was no family problem or work pressure for the DIG. Depression is the reason for the unfortunate incident, ” Arun reiterated. “It happened due to medical reasons and no need to politicize the matter,” he added.
Vijayakumar had not informed his seniors about the treatment was undergoing. “Only after his death did we come to know that he had been undergoing treatment for depression. He (DIG) was taking treatment for OCD and depression for the last few years,” said Arun.
” Vijayakumar got the pistol (with which he shot himself) from his personal security officer. I will inquire about it,” said Arun.
Arun said that Vijayakumar was a talented officer and he had worked in the police department with dedication. Earlier, minister for information and publicity MP Saminathan paid homage to Vijayakumar. After postmortem, Vijayakumar’sbody was sent to his hometown — Anaikkaraipatti — in Theni district.
