Subhashree Sahu, a 17-year-old girl from Ganjam, Odisha, attempted suicide after a video of her dancing with a friend went viral on social media.
The video, which her friend recorded without her consent, was leaked by an unknown person and circulated on WhatsApp, Facebook, and other platforms. The video showed Subhashree and her friend casually dancing to a popular song.
Subhashree, a student in class 12, faced severe online harassment and cyberbullying after the video was leaked. She received abusive messages, threats, and vulgar comments from strangers who mocked her appearance, clothes, and dance moves. Some even accused her of being involved in immoral activities and tarnishing the image of her family and community.
Unable to cope with the online abuse, Subhashree decided to end her life by consuming poison on Monday. She was rushed to a nearby hospital by her parents, who were unaware of the video and the cyberbullying. She is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in critical condition.
The police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act against the unknown person who leaked the video and the people who shared it online. They are also trying to trace the source of the video and identify the culprits.
Subhashree’s case has sparked outrage among netizens, who have condemned the cyberbullying and demanded justice for her.
Many have also expressed their support and solidarity with Subhashree and wished her a speedy recovery. They have also urged people to respect the privacy and dignity of others and not to share or forward such videos without consent.
