SAG-AFTRA, the American actors’ union, commenced a strike on July 14, 2023, due to an ongoing labour disagreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). This strike has occurred alongside a Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike as part of larger labour disputes within the entertainment industry.
This strike represents the first instance of actors initiating a labour conflict in the United States since the actors strike in 1980. Additionally, it is the first time since 1960 that actors and writers have jointly participated in a walkout, one of those actors being Nicolas Cage.
Following the strike ordered by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA), it has been reported that the Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage is not going to join Fantasia Film Festival, which is touted as one of North America’s largest genre events.
Cage was supposed to receive Fantasia’s Cheval Noir career achievement award while in Montreal, Canada, for the world premiere of filmmaker Yuval Adler’s “Sympathy for the Devil” on July 22.
Fantasia’s official website announced the information and informed followers of his absence. “We’re sad to announce that Nicolas Cage will no longer be able to attend the festival next weekend due to the SAG-AFTRA strike,” they said.
They also added that if other guests decide not to attend the Montreal film festival, they will continue to update their website.
As information from other guests is received and as the situation changes, it was told that they will be updating their website frequently. They said that,”Our feelings are with the WGA and the performers, and we hope that a fair agreement will be achieved soon for the unions.”
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA) voted to join forces with the screenwriters under the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in the first joint strike last week, after failing to come to an agreement on a new contract with the studios and streaming services, who are represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP)
