Who is Veerappan? Safe or unruly? That’s a question that haunts Selvamani Selvaraj’s new Netflix documentary, Hunting Veerappan. Divided into four parts, “Hunting Veerapan” tells the story of a hunter who has managed to escape and escape the authorities and two working states for nearly two decades.

The fact that Veerappan was India’s longest and most expensive manhunt was included. But it is the law of inequality and the central relationship that brings these interesting stories together to bring the Velapan events together.

The “Veerappan Hunt” begins with the definition of “husband” – the first reference to his wife Muthurlakshmi. It was 1989 and Veerapan didn’t even know. Muthulakshmi remembers the first time he was walking with a group of men behind him, his large pistol dangling over his shoulder.

A Change in Perspective From here, another important perspective begins on Veerapan’s activities. Investigative journalist Sunaad, then Karnataka forest officer B K Singh spoke of Veerapan’s determination and fearlessness against crime and helping the poor heal – soon be kind and be a leader. He later became a sandalwood smuggler. The threat began with his brutality and the murder of four police officers and then the forest ranger Srinivas.

Co-authors Forest Borrie, Apoorva Bakshi, Kimberly Hassett and Selvaraj brought interesting themes to the story. These facts have emerged from archival photographs as well as contemporary testimonies from gang members Muthulakshmi, some residents of Gopinatham, and police officers including Ashok “Tiger” Singh.

Balancing act of perspectives

The key here is noise. Knowledge works like a prism, allowing events, facts, and facts to merge and blur. In Veerapan’s Truth, truth lies in the porous layers, in the sights and sounds of the dense forest – creating a rich and atmospheric atmosphere for revelation.

As “The Hunt for Veerapan” continues to address the horrific murders and crimes committed by the man, the series also questions the system – the inadequacy and injustice that comes after men need it. The kidnapping and subsequent release of superstar Raj Kumar – what questions are still being asked and how are they being reported? Strangely enough, no one from the star family came.

Veerapan hunting works best when its target is unaffected by the devastating effects of years of murder. Many officers were killed, families were imprisoned with him, and many untold stories are still buried in the shadow of pain and trauma. In the final chilling ending, I was blown away by her captivating image and rich imagination.
