BSNL and Indian Army Overcomes Challenges to Install First-Ever Mobile Phone Tower at Siachen Glacier

A mobile tower has been installed for the first time at the world’s highest battlefield, Siachin Glacier, by the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army with the collaboration of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), establishing a base transceiver station (BTS) at the forward post.

Overcoming numerous logistic challenges, this partnership aims to extend mobile communication to soldiers posted in these highly challenging remote areas with their families.

The Significance of Connectivity:

Technology and connectivity are a lifeline in this digital era; they allow people to communicate, access information, and participate in various social activities, especially for soldiers who can’t meet their families because of remote area postings.

Overcoming the connectivity challenge:

Installing a mobile tower in an area like Siachin is a huge task for any company because of the extreme weather conditions, like temperature and high winds, which make it difficult to secure the tower’s stability.

The lack of infrastructure in the Siachin region made logistics and transportation a daunting task. However, BSNL’s technical expertise and unwavering commitment to connectivity enabled them to overcome these obstacles and successfully install the tower.

A boost for soldier morale:

The installation of the mobile tower is not just about convenience; it is also a significant morale booster. In an environment as challenging as Siachin, where soldiers endure extreme cold and hostile conditions,

It helps the soldier maintain vital connections with their loved ones, offering a source of motivation and relief from the extreme stress associated with their service.

Minister Devusinh Chauhan and Anand Mahindra, chairperson of the Mahindra Group, also expressed their happiness over the news and said, “This device is as important as the Vikram Lander.”
