The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra on Saturday as part of an investigation against illegal betting apps. The raids took place in Indore, Hubballi, and Mumbai and resulted in the seizure of Rs 46.5 lakh in unaccounted cash.
The ED said that the illegal betting apps were being operated in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and other parts of the country to lure unsuspecting individuals. The apps allowed users to register and transfer money to their wallets via UPI payments and then use the money to bet on various events.
The action taken by the ED so far
The ED said it had conducted raids at 15 premises in Indore, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune on Sunday. The agency said it has seized 17 laptops, seven hard disks, 16 mobile phones, four routers and several documents related to the illegal betting activities.
The ED also identified several bank accounts and properties linked to the accused. The agency said it is in the process of freezing the assets and attaching them under the PMLA. The ED said it is also coordinating with other agencies and foreign counterparts to trace the money trail and identify the beneficiaries of the illegal betting racket.
