For dependents or surviving spouses of veterans, navigating educational benefits can be crucial for pursuing academic goals.
The Veterans Affairs (VA) offers valuable programs such as the Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) to support eligible individuals. Understanding the criteria, application process, and available benefits is essential for those seeking educational assistance.
The DEA program extends educational and training opportunities to dependents and spouses of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition.
Who is eligible for VA Basic Dependents Educational Assistance?
The eligibility criteria for the Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) program include spouses and children of veterans or service members who meet specific conditions.
It’s for individuals who have been determined to be permanently and totally disabled due to service-connected causes, those on active duty anticipated to be discharged with a permanent and total disability, individuals who died while in service or due to service-connected causes, and those currently missing in action or captured in the line of duty.
To enroll in the program, eligible spouses or dependents must complete and submit the Dependent’s Application for VA Educational Assistance (VA Form 22-5490) to the VA Regional Processing Office or apply online through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
Following the application, a Certificate of Eligibility is issued, which should be submitted to UC Merced’s Veteran Certifying Official.
Dependents attending at least half-time are eligible to receive up to $600 per semester and up to $1200 total for tutor-reimbursement expenses. The responsibility for contacting tutors, negotiating wages, and managing payments lies with the dependents.
For further assistance and information, applicants can contact UC Merced’s Veteran Certifying Official at 209-228-7641 or [email protected]. Alternatively, the Veterans Administration Educational Office can be reached at 888-442-4551, and direct deposit information is available at 888-838-2778.
