The tragic death of South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun who starred in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite” has sparked a public uproar over the way the police are handling his case. Lee accused of using illegal drugs, was found dead in his home on Wednesday, apparently by suicide.
The Incheon Metropolitan Police, who conducted the investigation, have faced criticism for their harsh interrogation of Lee, which reportedly lasted for 10 hours without a break.
The police chief, Kim Hui-jung, defended the police actions on Thursday, saying they were lawful and necessary to verify the allegations. He also said Lee agreed to cooperate with the investigation and showed no signs of distress. He expressed his condolences to Lee’s family and said he felt “deep regret” over his death.
“The investigation of the deceased was conducted based on specific reports, testimony and evidence and under legally prescribed procedures,” he said.
