The Hindi movie ‘Kapoor and Sons’ was released on Friday, March 19, 2016 in India and across the world.
And if, audiences thronging the theaters and their response after watching the film, is anything to go by, then Dharma Productions and director Shakun Batra have a sure shot winner on their hands.
After a not so successful debut with ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’, Shakun, this time, gets his act right and bang on target.
Plot
The story of the movie revolves around a dysfunctional Punjabi family comprising of a patriarch (Rishi Kapoor), his son (Rajat Kapor), daughter-in-law (Ratna Pathak Shah) and two grandsons Rahul (Fawad Khan) and Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra).
Circumstances force the grandchildren living far away in London and New Jersey, to come down for a family reunion in Coonoor, a sleepy town situated in Tamil Nadu.
Unlike Karan Johar’s earlier films, nothing is perfect in the relationship of this family, with husband-wife always at loggerheads as they continue carrying on with their marriage gone sour and the two youngsters, Rahul, and Arjun sharing a love-hate relationship.
The sole common link which they share between them is their liking for the lively neighborhood girl, Tia (Alia Bhatt). How the, always at each other’s throat family, resolve their differences and find their bearings, is what the crux of the movie is about.
Coming to the performances of the film’s central star-cast, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, as always, is at the helm of the proceedings and proves his worth as a natural performer. As a lively and jolly 90-year-old grandpa, the actor is still a delight to watch.

However, veteran pair Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor as the bickering couple has proved to be the scene stealers of the whole drama.
As for Alia Bhatt, with limited scope for performance and screen time, she has managed to put up a decent job, as expected of hers. Fawad Khan, with his dashing good looks and pleasing appearance, once again proves his acting skills after ‘Khoobsurat’.
As for Siddharth Malhotra, viewers will find a marked improvement in his performance in ‘Kapoor and Sons’ as compared to his earlier films.
Thanks to the director, the family interactions and their behavior towards each other, is kept as real as possible, unlike the families are seen in Karan Johar’s earlier movies.
The film, with a limited running time of 132 minutes, keeps the audiences hooked on to the proceedings, with some of the sequences having turned out well and eye catching.
Music and songs of the movie are above average with ‘Ladki Beautiful’ already a hit with the party circuit.
Verdict
‘Kapoor and Sons’ is a must watch movie having the right ingredients like family bonding, emotions, and romance. All in all, a worth watch family entertainer, and value for your ticket money.
