The undisputed heavyweight title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is done. In a unique appearance, the British boxer had a freak cut above his right eye during sparring at his training camp in Saudi Arabia. It was a serious injury that needed immediate medical attention, due to which the fight for 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was postponed.
Fury’s Disappointment and Usyk’s Response
The WBC champion Fury claimed to be ‘absolutely devastated’ about the whole saga. The 35-year-old was training for this fight for a while and said he had never been in such good shape. As for the promoter of Usyk, Alex Krassyuk, he hoped Fury would recover quickly but hinted at a possible retirement. As such, the fighter that wins the fight later will become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.
Uncertain Future and Potential Replacement
Originally scheduled for December 23, the fight suffered a series of delays caused by Fury’s fight with Francis Ngannou, which took place in October. Fury has won 34 fights as an active professional since 2008. The newly fixed date is to be decided if the medical personnel determine how long it takes for a cut to heal. Some reports point out that Croatian Filip Hrgovic could replace Fury. The heavyweight scene is fraught with uncertainties, and it should be noted that other big fights, such as Anthony Joshua’s bouts against Francis Ngannou in March are in the cards.
