The Indian government is prepared to issue a notice to Google regarding a response from its AI platform, Gemini (previously Bard), which labeled Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “fascist.” The incident has sparked heated debate about AI bias, freedom of speech, and the potential dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence.
What Happened?
A user reportedly queried Gemini about PM Modi’s alleged fascist tendencies. Gemini was asked whether PM Modi is a ‘fascist,’ to which it responded that he has been “accused of implementing policies some experts have characterized as fascist,” based on factors like the “BJP’s Hindu nationalist ideology, its crackdown on dissent, and its use of violence against religious minorities”.
However, when a similar question was asked about former US President Donald Trump, Gemini responded: “Elections are a complex topic with fast-changing information. To make sure you have the most accurate information, try Google Search.”
Government’s Response and Accusations:
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, called the response a “direct violation” of IT rules and the Criminal Code. He argued it violated basic due diligence requirements and accused Google of harboring bias against specific individuals. The government is issuing a show-cause notice demanding an explanation from Google and threatening potential prosecution if the response isn’t deemed satisfactory.
