The first qualifiers of IPL 2016 will see Royal Challengers Bangalore locking horns with debutants Gujarat Lions at Chinnaswamy Stadium on 24 May 2016.
The first playoffs will see the top of the table contenders Gujarat Lions pitted against the hard-hitting Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The winner of the playoff will move on to the finals to be played on Sunday. The real question is can the Greenhorns; Gujarat, find a way to stop the blitzkrieg called Royal Challengers led by a marauding Virat Kohli.
Earlier Royal Challengers crushed Delhi Daredevils by six wickets on Sunday. In the process, they also pushed Sunrisers Hyderabad from second to third place because of a better run rate — an impressive +0.932.
Rising Pune Supergiants finished one place off the bottom with a positive rate of +0.015. Newcomers Gujarat Lions, playing in their first IPL season won nine of their 14 games and finished on the top of the table.
Three teams, Royal Challengers, Bangalore; Sunrisers, Hyderabad; and KKR all ended up with eight wins, six losses, and 16 points. However, the deciding factors were net run rate. Strangely Gujarat had the second lowest run rate at 2016 IPL season among all the teams.
Royal Challengers have a hard-hitting trio of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, and international A.B. de Villiers. However, Gujarat Lions hopes to exploit a weak RCB bowling attack. They also have two big hitters in the form of New Zealand Captain Brendon McCullum and former Australia T20 Captain Aaron Finch.
Gujarat Lions may have topped the table with 18 points but are still underdogs against a pillaging Kohli and Co., and it will take an extraordinary effort from the likes of Aaron Finch, Brendon McCullum, and Captain Suresh Raina to overcome the batting strength of RCB.
The stakes are stacked heavily against Gujarat Lions, who had earlier suffered the worst defeat (144 runs) in the tournament’s history.
