Meena Sankranti is an auspicious day for the Hindus. The festival will be observed on March 14 this year. This day is considered to be very propitious for donations and charity work known as “Dan-Punya”. The festival falls during the month of Phalguna and is a sign of the onset of the spring season while bidding goodbye to the harsh winter. Rituals performed to attain Punya(reward)
On the auspicious day of Meena Sankranti, devotees pray to Surya Dev (Sun God). They take a bath in holy rivers, offer prayers to Surya Dev and take his blessings before beginning any charity work. The devotees donate as per their financial budget. It is said that if people pray to Surya Dev and offer him Arghya, then one can attain the blessings of the Sun God. Arghya is basically when a person fills a copper pot with water and takes some red flowers, jaggery and red sandalwood to pray to Surya Dev while chanting the Surya Mantra. People give out money, food and clothing to Brahmins and the impoverished.

There are 12 Sankranti’s observed in a year and Meena Sankranti is amongst them. All of the Sankranti’s are a very favorable time to engage in philanthropic work. However, there is a timing which is considered to be auspicious for the charitable work and Surya Puja. The timings for Meena Sankranti begin at 12:46 pm to 6:29 pm. However, the period between 12:46 pm to 2:46 pm is considered to be holy for charity and donation. The period is known as Maha Punya Kaal. This Year Meena Sankranti falls on March 14.
