What is Dol Purnima?

Dol Jatra, also known as Dol Purnima, is the last festival of the year according to the Bengali calendar. People welcome spring with open arms and celebrate this event. Although Holi and Holi are the same festival, both are based on different Hindu stories.

While the Bengali Dore Festival centers around Krishna and Radha, Holi is based on the story of Prahlad, the avatar of Vishnu in northern India. Dole in Vrindavan begins the day after the Phalgun full moon night, according to the Bengali lunar calendar.

According to legend, on this day, Krishna first told Radha how much he loved her while playing with her. Dol means “swing.” After applying the colors, Sakhi commemorates this union by having the couple race on a palanquin, the symbol of jatra (journey). This is how Dol Jatra was performed. Traditional Bengali Dol Jatra is also performed using dry colors.

Meaning of Dol Purnima

It begins with happiness and auspiciousness in Radha Vallabh and Haridasi sampradayas, where the idol of Radha Krishna is worshipped and given colours and flowers passionately devoted to this festival. This event is more critical in Gaudiya Vaishnavism as it celebrates the birthday of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the union of Radha and Kri Shiner.
