Holi Bhai Dooj is an Indian festival that mainly celebrates the pious bond between a brother and a sister. It is also known as Bhatri Dwitiya. Annually, Bhai Dooj is celebrated two times. One falls two days after Diwali, and the other occurs during Chaitra in Dwitiya Tithi of Krishna Paksha.
This year, Holi Bhai Dooj falls on March 27.
History of Holi Bhai Dooj
The bond between siblings is special. A brother and sister’s relationship is one of the purest and most beautiful in this world. On this day, siblings make time for each other and practice gratefulness for their beautiful bond.
According to legends, The God of Death known as Lord Yama once visited his sister Yamuna during Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha. The month was Kartik. Yamuna was elated to see her brother, welcomed him with numerous food items, and put a tilak on his forehead. Lord Yama, pleased with his sister’s hospitality declared that any sister who prepares food for her brother and applies tilak on him with love and sincerity will be blessed with prosperity and longevity on this day.
How to celebrate Holi Bhai Dooj
Early in the morning, both the brother and sister take a bath.
The puja room is cleaned and decorated.
Different sweet dishes like kheer and halwa along with other delicacies are prepared.
Sisters prepare a thali for their brother consisting of vermillion, Mauli (red-coloured thread), earthen diya, and unbroken rice.
Sisters then apply the vermillion and unbroken rice on their brother’s forehead and tie the Mauli on their wrists.
They feed sweets to their brother. The brother and sister then exchange gifts or cash. If the sister is younger than the brother, he touches her brother’s feet to seek his blessings and if he is older, the brother seeks his sister’s blessings and they pray to God for each other’s well-being and happiness.
