So, we all know how the classic marriage proposal is supposed to go down, right? It’s meant to be this out-of-the-blue, surprising moment where your partner gets down on one knee and pops the question, leaving you speechless. But leave it to our gal Cecily Strong to flip the script entirely!
The former “Saturday Night Live” queen recently dished out all the deets on her engagement to boyfriend “Jack,” and you all, it was anything but a shocking surprise for her. Cecily pieced together the whole thing happening before ol’ Jack could even make his move!
The Crime-Solving Comedian Spotted the Clues
During an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” the comedian explained how Jack was stressing over a bunch of texts and emails on his phone one day. When she took a peek at his screen, a message from one of his buddies said, “How did it go?” followed by a dead giveaway ring emoji. Subtle, Jack!
As Cecily ideally put it, her immediate reaction was “Oh no…” because the poor guy’s plan had been utterly exposed. She admitted she gave him the green light to rip off the band-aid and propose since the cat was out of the bag.
When Heartbreak Meets New Love
Now, here’s the beautiful part of Cecily’s love story. The actress has been super private about her relationship with Jack, but she once opened up in an essay about meeting him during an intense time. Cecily had been grieving the tragic loss of her beloved cousin Owen when she attended a Christmas party where their paths first crossed.
At first, the timing felt “so difficult” as Cecily navigated this new romance amid such heartbreak. Eventually, she came to view Jack as “a gift” from her late cousin, even telling Jack, “I like thinking of it that way” when they made their relationship official. I’m not crying; you’re crying!
From “Oh No” to “Can I Wear the Ring Already?!”
Circling back to the engagement sitch, Cecily admitted that the months of waiting for Jack to pull the trigger started wearing on her. She hilariously recalled one night in December when she simply looked at her man and said, “Can I just wear the damn ring now?”
And just like that, the pair were engaged – untraditional and imperfect but 100% their quirky style. Hey, when you know, you know! Sometimes, you can’t be bothered with keeping up the proposal charade anymore. Have to respect Cecily for cutting to the chase and securing that rock on her finger already. What a wildly relatable engagement tale from one of comedy’s biggest stars!
