The 81-year-old US President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 while campaigning for his elections in Las Vegas.
The White House said he had mild symptoms, including a runny nose and a cough. “He is vaccinated and boosted and experiencing mild symptoms,” White House press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated.
President kept in isolation.
Biden has taken his first dose of Paxlovid, an oral antiviral used to treat COVID-19. He has returned to the US state of Delaware for self-isolation and will continue to perform his duties from there.
Biden took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the people. He said, “I tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon, but I am feeling good and thank everyone for the well wishes.”

I will be isolating as I recover, and during this time I will continue to work to get the job done for the American people.— President Biden (@POTUS) July 17, 2024
He further stated that he would isolate himself as he recovered and that, during this time, he would continue to work for the American people.
Health and age concerns mount
The illness comes when Biden, 81, faces growing questions about his fitness to run for a second term. Before he tested positive, Biden, in an interview, said he would drop his re-election bid if a medical condition arose. This is the first time Biden has considered dropping out of the presidential race.
He has previously shrugged off pressure to end his campaign and always insisted that he will fight till the end.
Pressure on Biden to step down
Joe Biden has been under increasing pressure from Democratic allies to reconsider his presidential run against Republic nominee Donald Trump, following concerns about his fitness to campaign.
Democrats have been pressuring Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential contest after his appalling performance in a debate with Republican nominee and former US President Donald Trump, who survived an assassination attempt at his campaign rally.
