Robert Downey Jr. Set to Return to MCU as Dr. Doom

From being a superhero to playing the supervillain, Hollywood Actor Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Victor von Doom. The actor has been fondly known to his fans as Iron Man, entertaining the audience for over a decade in the Marvel franchise.

The Announcement

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Robert Downey Jr. announced the same at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, where the actor went on stage hiding in Doctor Doom’s iconic mask and green cloak.

“Different mask, same task,” Downey Jr. wrote on Instagram, after removing the mask and revealing himself to the audience.

The actor also posted a picture of him staring at Dr. Doom’s mask with the same caption.

It was met with great excitement and curiosity. The audience hooted and applauded seeing their beloved hero transitioning to the complex and iconic role of a villain. Netizens have been expressing their enthusiasm all over social media.

Downey Jr.’s MCU Journey

Robert Downey Jr. joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the superhero Iron Man in 2008, launching the Marvel movie franchise, and has become a crowd favorite ever since.

He was last seen as the Iron Man five years ago in “Avengers: Endgame” where the superhero died, and the fans have missed him since.

The actor will now make a comeback in a different role as Dr. Victor Von Doom, a prominent villain in the Marvel comic books.

The film “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to release in May 2026. Marvel Studios has also announced “Avengers: Secret Wars which will be released a year later in May 2027.

The franchise has been trying to reverse its recent box office misses. The recent release of Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, made $96 million on its opening day on Friday. This has offered the chance for a potential revival.
