The compound wall of Idgah Maidan at Chennamma Circle in Hubballi is slated to be partially removed due to ongoing flyover construction works. The Public Works Department (PWD) national highways division officials have initiated this step to facilitate the construction of two pillars for the flyover.
The Idgah Maidan, which has been at the center of legal battles and religious symbolism in Karnataka, is now witnessing changes as the city adapts to infrastructure needs.
Historically, this ground played a crucial role in the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. The dispute over the Idgah Maidan in Hubli was a turning point, akin to the Ayodhya movement in northern India.
Ownership Dispute:
The Supreme Court has ruled that the Idgah Maidan belongs exclusively to the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), settling a 40-year-old legal battle. Furthermore, the HDMC has initiated the process of renaming the Hubballi Idgah Maidan as Kittur Rani Chennamma Maidan, signifying a shift in its identity and purpose.
In June 2022, Hindutva organizations sought permission to hold events on the Idgah Maidan. They petitioned the civic body, requesting that all communities be allowed to host events there, including International Yoga Day.
The BJP’s origins in Karnataka trace back to this period, when it transformed from having just four seats in the state assembly in 1989 to forty seats in 1994.
