Bangladesh imposed a nationwide ban on several leading social media platforms. Effective from August 2, the ban restricts citizens’ access to popular apps such as Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube.

The ban follows an earlier suspension of Meta’s platforms (formerly Facebook) due to unrest over quota reforms in the country.
The government aims to address concerns related to social media usage during this period of tension.

Impact and Restrictions:

Access to these platforms via mobile data connections is affected.
VPN usage is expected to rise, potentially impacting overall internet speeds in Bangladesh1.

Turkey also announced a similar ban on Instagram on the same day.
Previously, Meta’s platforms (Instagram and Facebook) were suspended in July due to widespread unrest1.

Internet Speed Concerns:

While the country’s internet speed had returned to normal levels on August 1, the ban may lead to increased VPN usage and potential slowdowns.

Many businesses rely on platforms like Instagram and TikTok for marketing and brand promotion. With the ban, they’ve lost a crucial channel to reach their audience.

Loss of Income:

Influencers who monetize their content on platforms like Instagram and TikTok are directly impacted. Sponsored posts, brand collaborations, and affiliate marketing opportunities have dwindled.
