An Australian breakdancer, Rachael “Raygun” Gunn made waves at the 2024 Paris Olympics with her unique performance. Despite facing criticism, Raygun’s routine captured global attention.
Raygun’s breaking routine featured a single move that drew comparisons to a kangaroo hopping. While she lost all three of her match-ups against rival dancers (B-Girls), her creativity and style left an impression.
Social media erupted with memes and unfavorable comparisons, including one likening her move to Homer Simpson rolling on the floor. Some criticized her choice of attire—she wore the Australian green-and-gold team uniform instead of urban streetwear favored by others.

Raygun’s Response:
NY Times reported, defending her performance, Raygun stated, “I was always going to be the underdog going in. I did what I do best and showed myself, my creativity, and a little bit of Australian character.” She proudly wore the Australian uniform, emphasizing her pride in representing her country.
Supportive Voices:
A reporter from The Australian newspaper urged people to “lay off” Raygun, emphasizing her cheerful demeanor and love for her country. Raygun herself encouraged individuality, posting on Instagram, “Don’t be afraid to be different.”
“Meanwhile Japanese Twitter is roasting Raygun because her outfit looks like the uniform of a Japanese courier company, yet she lost to Logistix,” another added.
In the end, breaking history was made as Japan’s Ami Yuasa secured the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded for breaking. Yuasa’s blend of artistry and athleticism wowed the crowd, proving that breaking had found its place on the Olympic stage.
