After nearly two weeks of negotiations, Disney and DirecTV have reached an agreement, ending the blackout of popular channels such as ABC and ESPN. This deal comes just in time for major events like college football games and the Emmy Awards.
Background
The blackout began on September 1, 2024, when the previous carriage agreement expired. This left DirecTV’s more than 11 million satellite and streaming customers without access to Disney’s channels, including ABC, ESPN, FX, and Disney Channel.
The Agreement
The new deal includes several key points that benefit both companies and their customers. DirecTV will continue to carry Disney’s entertainment, sports, and news channels, including ABC, ESPN, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX networks, and National Geographic channels reported WSJ.
Streaming Options
In addition to the traditional channels, the agreement also encompasses new streaming options. DirecTV customers will have access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ as part of select packages. These services will also be available on an a la carte basis.
Joint Statement
In a joint statement, the companies said, “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DirecTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options. DirecTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment, and this agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DirecTV’s customers. We’d like to thank all affected viewers for their patience and are pleased to restore Disney’s entire portfolio of networks in time for college football and the Emmy Awards this weekend”.
Customer Impact
The blackout had a powerful impact on DirecTV customers, who missed out on a variety of sports programming, including college football, the U.S. Open, and the NFL’s Monday Night Football4. The new agreement aims to prevent such disruptions in the future by offering more flexible viewing options.
