Israel’s Mossad spy agency has been accused of planting explosives inside 5,000 pagers imported by the Lebanese group Hezbollah. This covert operation, which took place months before Tuesday’s devastating detonations, has been described as an unprecedented security breach by a senior Lebanese security source and another source who spoke to Reuters.
The coordinated explosions resulted in widespread chaos across Lebanon, with thousands of pagers detonating simultaneously. The aftermath was catastrophic, leaving nine people dead and nearly 3,000 others wounded, including Hezbollah fighters and Iran’s envoy to Beirut.
“This operation represents a significant breach in Hezbollah’s security,” stated the senior Lebanese security source. “The scale and precision of the attack are unlike anything we’ve seen before.”
The incident has raised serious concerns about the vulnerability of Hezbollah’s communication networks and the extent of Mossad’s infiltration capabilities. “The fact that Mossad was able to plant explosives in such a large number of devices without detection is alarming,” added the source.
The Lebanese government has condemned the attack, calling it a blatant act of aggression. “This is a clear violation of our sovereignty and an attack on our people,” said a government spokesperson. “We will take all necessary measures to hold those responsible accountable.”
Hezbollah has yet to issue an official statement, but sources within the group have indicated that an internal investigation is underway to determine how the breach occurred and to prevent future incidents.
