The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear the bail plea of Chhattisgarh-based businessman Sunil Dammani on October 3. Dammani was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in August last year in connection with a money laundering case linked to the illegal gambling Mahadev app.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will review the urgent plea. “We usually do not skip the board (cases listed for hearing on a given day), but this is a bail plea… We will hear it on Thursday,” stated Chief Justice Chandrachud.
Dammani has been in jail for over 13 months. His counsel emphasized the urgency of the matter, arguing that prolonged detention without bail is unjust. “My client has been in jail for over 13 months. This plea needs urgent attention,” said Dammani’s lawyer.
According to The Deccan Herald, the ED’s investigation stems from a 2022 FIR filed by the state police against the Mahadev app at Mohan Nagar police station in the Durg district.
The agency alleges that Dammani, along with his brother Anil Dammani and Chhattisgarh Police assistant sub-inspector Chandra Bhushan Verma, was involved in hawala transactions and other illegal activities. “The Dammani brothers own a jewellery shop and a petrol pump and allegedly played a role in hawala transactions,” the ED stated.
The case has drawn considerable attention due to the involvement of multiple high-profile individuals, including Vinod Verma, political advisor to former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. The ED conducted searches at the properties of 10 people, including Verma, as part of their investigation.
