Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will visit Russia from October 22-23, 2024, at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. The visit is to attend the 16th BRICS Summit, which will be held in Kazan under Russia’s chairmanship.
The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, announced the news via a press release on its official website.
The “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security” summit will provide a crucial platform for leaders to discuss critical global issues. This year’s summit is particularly important as it includes leaders from the newly expanded BRICS bloc, which now comprises Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, alongside the original members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member countries and other invited leaders. These discussions will focus on enhancing cooperation and addressing regional and global concerns.
The summit aims to review the progress of ongoing BRICS initiatives and explore new areas for collaboration. It also seeks to position BRICS as a significant counterweight to Western influence in global affairs.
Prime Minister Modi’s participation underscores India’s commitment to multilateralism and its role in fostering global development and security. The visit is anticipated further to strengthen India’s ties within the BRICS bloc and open new avenues for cooperation.
Collectively, BRICS countries account for roughly 24% of the global GDP and 17% of global trade. Their robust economic growth over the past two decades has shifted the balance of global economic power.
