J&K CM Omar Abdullah: ‘The Real Work Begins Now’

Newly sworn-in Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, underscored the challenges ahead for his administration in a stirring address to party workers in Jammu. Abdullah, who recently led the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) to a noteworthy victory in the Assembly elections, highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between the government and the people.

“I believe we have done the easy work by reaching here (winning Assembly elections) and now the difficult job begins for us,” Abdullah stated, acknowledging the efforts that led to their electoral success. He emphasized the need for his government to be responsive and accountable to the public. “We have to fulfill the wishes of people. We have to solve the problems of people. We have to reduce the complaints of people. We have to reduce the gap between the people and the government,” he added.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come at a pivotal time as his administration takes the reins in the Union Territory. Abdullah’s speech resonated with the party workers, who have been instrumental in the JKNC’s recent electoral triumph.

One of the foremost challenges is the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. The region was stripped of its statehood and special autonomy in August 2019, which has been a contentious issue. The new government, led by Omar Abdullah, has prioritized this, but achieving it requires navigating complex political dynamics.

There are persistent human rights challenges, including allegations of violations by security forces. The Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the Public Safety Act (PSA) have been criticized for obstructing justice and accountability.
