Patient care at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is currently under strain due to a major doctor protest. Recently, 54 senior doctors tendered their resignations in support of their junior colleagues, who have been staging a hunger strike. The protest is not just about routine grievances but stems from a deep concern over security at the hospital following a violent incident involving a colleague. This move is aimed at pressuring the state government to address these concerns.
However, despite the mass resignations, the doctors have been clear: their actions are not intended to harm patients. In fact, the hospital’s services—both outpatient and inpatient—continue to function as normal, with the doctors still treating patients. According to Dr. Sunit Hazra, an orthopedic surgeon leading the protest, the resignations are a symbolic gesture meant to force the government to negotiate.
At the heart of the protest is the safety of both patients and medical staff. The doctors have expressed frustration at what they describe as the government’s inaction. Despite these tensions, they remain committed to patient care, refusing to let their actions compromise the well-being of those who rely on the hospital.
Yet, the situation remains precarious. If the state fails to respond, the protests could escalate, with the potential to disrupt patient services across other hospitals in Kolkata, where solidarity protests are brewing. The doctors’ resolve to push for improved safety conditions has brought attention to a critical issue in the healthcare sector, balancing their duty to patients with their demand for a safer work environment.
