India and China Sign Landmark Deal to End Border Dispute

India and China

India and China have agreed to expedite disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, a major development in de-escalating the ongoing border tensions between the two nations.

This agreement was reached during a meeting between Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in St. Petersburg on the sidelines of a BRICS summit.

Both sides committed to working “with urgency” to resolve the remaining friction points, particularly in areas like Depsang Plains and Demchok, which have seen tensions since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

The meeting underscores the necessity of peace along the LAC for the normalization of India-China relations. Doval stressed that respect for the LAC and maintaining tranquillity in border areas is essential to rebuilding bilateral ties.

The discussions followed ongoing diplomatic and military talks between the two countries, aiming for a peaceful resolution of the border issues that have plagued the region since the violent clash in June 2020.

The agreement is seen as a critical step towards restoring peace and stability along the disputed border, which has been a point of contention since the Galwan Valley incident that resulted in casualties on both sides.

Both nations recognize the importance of their bilateral relationship for regional and global stability, and this move towards disengagement is expected to pave the way for further dialogue.
