Hindu Devotees Assaulted by Canadian Cops During Peaceful Protest

A peaceful protest turned violent as Canadian police clashed with Hindu devotees demonstrating against an attack on a temple in Brampton. Videos shared by journalist Daniel Bordman show police officers using force against the protesters, many of whom were waving the Indian flag.

Incident Details

The protest was organized in response to a recent attack on a Hindu temple by a pro-Khalistan mob. The temple hosted a consular camp co-organized by the High Commission of India when the incident occurred.

According to Bordman, the officers were at the temple to restore order following altercations between Khalistani supporters and members of the Hindu community. Still, they were seen “punching” templegoers and “beating them with batons”.

Eyewitness Accounts

One video shows a bearded officer charging at a man and then punching him, seemingly without provocation. A woman who caught the incident on camera accused the police of targeting only Hindu community members while shielding Khalistani protesters.

“The police were outnumbered by the Khalistani extremists and made no arrests after the incident,” said Nayan Bramhabhatt, a priest at the Hindu Sabha Mandir.

Official Responses

Peel Regional Police addressed the protest on X, stating that police presence was beefed up at the temple to maintain public order. Chief Nishan Duraiappah stated, “We respect the right to protest in a peaceful and safe manner but will not tolerate violence and criminal acts” .

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack on Hindu devotees, calling acts of violence unacceptable in Canada. Several Canadian lawmakers and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad demanded strict action against those involved.

Community Reaction

The Hindu community in Brampton is now scared to visit temples, with many feeling unprotected by local law enforcement. “The police in the area were completely ineffective in protecting the minorities and failed to create adequate security arrangements,” Bramhabhatt added.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for better protection of religious minorities in Canada. The High Commission of India has also expressed its disappointment over handling the situation.
