In a bold display of cultural unity, Pakistani actress Sonya Hussaiyn recently hosted a Diwali celebration, sharing glimpses of the festivities on her Instagram. The event, which included traditional decorations and attire, was meant to honor the Hindu festival of lights and promote inclusivity.
However, the celebration was met with mixed reactions. While many praised Hussain for her efforts to embrace cultural diversity, others criticized her for participating in a non-Muslim festival and wearing a bindi, a traditional Hindu symbol. The backlash was swift, with some netizens unfollowing her on social media and leaving negative comments.
In her Instagram post, Hussaiyn emphasized the importance of celebrating all cultures and quoted Pakistan’s founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah: “You are free; you are free to go to your temples… You may belong to any religion, caste, or creed—that has nothing to do with the business of the State.” She added, “Pakistan is a beautiful mosaic of cultures and beliefs, and we must celebrate our minorities as vital parts of this nation”.

Despite the criticism, Hussaiyn remains steadfast in her belief that such celebrations can foster unity and respect among different communities. “Let’s honor the rights and freedoms of all our citizens, ensuring that everyone feels at home in Pakistan,” she wrote.
