The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly descended into chaos on Thursday as BJP members vehemently opposed a resolution seeking the restoration of the region’s special status. The Speaker was forced to direct the marshalling out of several BJP legislators who stormed the well of the House, disrupting proceedings.
The resolution, introduced by Deputy Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Surinder Choudhary, called for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and constitutional guarantees. “This legislative assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Choudhary stated during the session.
BJP members, however, were quick to express their disapproval. “This resolution is against the rules and was not listed on the agenda for the day,” argued BJP leader Ravinder Raina. “We cannot support a move that seeks to undo the progress made since the abrogation of Article 370”.

The Speaker, attempting to restore order, repeatedly requested the BJP members to return to their seats. When his pleas went unheeded, he directed the marshals to escort the protesting members out of the chamber. “The decorum of the House must be maintained. Such disruptions are unacceptable,” the Speaker asserted.
Despite the uproar, the resolution was passed by a voice vote, marking a significant moment in the ongoing debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. “This is a historic day for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We are committed to ensuring that their rights and identity are protected,” Choudhary declared after the session.
