President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has hinted at potential retaliation against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump‘s recent tariff threats. Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is actively addressing the issues of migration and drug trafficking, which Trump cited as reasons for the proposed tariffs.
Sheinbaum’s Response to Tariff Threats
President Sheinbaum stated, “One tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on until we put at risk common businesses.” She highlighted the significant efforts Mexico has made to stem the flow of migrants, noting that “caravans of migrants no longer reach the border.” She also pointed out that Mexico has been working to curb the flow of drugs, including the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl, which she described as “a problem of public health and consumption in your country’s society.”
Economic Implications
The potential for a tariff war has caused concern among businesses on both sides of the border. Sheinbaum warned that such measures could lead to inflation and job losses in both Mexico and the United States. “It is unacceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in Mexico and the United States,” she asserted.
Call for Regional Cooperation
Sheinbaum also criticized U.S. spending on weapons, suggesting that the funds could be better used to address the root causes of migration. “If a percentage of what the United States spends on war were dedicated to peace and development, that would address the underlying causes of migration,” she said.
