Pittsburgh Penguins star has home burglarized and championship rings stolen
A burglar went into the home of a Pittsburgh Penguins player and took out his trophy case, leaving him without his Stanley Cup rings. This is the most recent in a series of burglaries that target professional players.
The residence of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was broken into, according to a statement issued by the team on Tuesday. According to reports, the break-in took place over the weekend.
Although Allegheny County police responded to a burglary report on Saturday, it is unclear whether Malkin was the caller because the department does not disclose the identities of crime victims.
According to The Athletic, Malkin discovered that thieves had stolen his three Stanley Cup rings from his house.
Malkin’s home invasion is the most recent in a string of break-ins at famous players’ homes.
In mid-November, burglars targeted Kansas City Chiefs players Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. A month later, in early December, Joe Burrow, quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, had his house broken into.
The burglaries are being investigated by federal law enforcement as coordinated thefts.
Last month, the FBI warned athletes and sports teams that their properties were being targeted by a criminal organization. For more information, read here.
