Elon Musk recently expressed his dissatisfaction with California’s COVID-19 restrictions, highlighting the challenges they posed to Tesla’s operations during the pandemic.
Speaking about the period, Musk remarked, “The COVID actions almost killed Tesla because every other auto plant in the county was allowed to open but ours, which was in California, was not allowed to open. So they almost killed Tesla.”
COVID-19 Restrictions Targeted Tesla’s California Plant
During the pandemic, Tesla’s Fremont, California, factory was among the few auto plants in the county to remain closed due to state-mandated restrictions.
Musk emphasized the disparity, stating that other automakers in neighboring facilities were permitted to resume operations while Tesla faced prolonged shutdowns.
Elon Musk’s Response to Tesla’s Pandemic Challenges
Musk, known for his candid remarks, has consistently criticized regulations he deemed unfair to Tesla. He had previously called the COVID-19 restrictions in California “fascist” during a Tesla earnings call in 2020.
His frustration prompted Tesla to relocate its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, where the business environment was perceived as more favorable.
