Satyajit Ray's posters used in the fight against COVID-19
Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray is a Bengali name that is known to the mass. He was a man who was ahead of his time. A person like him was for all age groups and all types of people. On 2nd May, India celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of this incredible human being who is no more with us. The man is known as the Oscar winner as the lifetime achiever in movies besides being the forever winner of people’s hearts. To show tribute to this man, an artist recreated the posters of his film with pictures of the recent COVID crisis to spread awareness amongst the mass. This report has been recorded in India Today with the greatest of pleasures. Cinephiles worldwide love this individual, and there could not have been a better way to celebrate his birth anniversary during such times.

Recreation of the posters

Aniket Mitra is a Mumbai-based artist who redesigned/recreated these film posters. Pather Panchali, Devi, Nayak, and seven other movies went through this recreation. The poster designed of “Pather Panchali” shows a healthcare worker wearing a PPE kit and driving an ambulance, thus depicting the story of the path to be covered. The poster for “Seemabaddha” shows police officials conducting their duties while following the COVID guidelines, highlighting that they are obliged to do their responsibilities forever. The poster from “Jana Aranya” again shows the number of pyres burning in the cemeteries, thus depicting the crowds of people, but they are not alive but dead this time. Besides, other posters show such instances where the movie title is explained well in the crisis with a bit of pun mixed up with it.

Ray was ahead of his time!

All these posters show how ahead Ray was of his time. Also, how the instances mentioned or used in his movies can still be related differently. He was always highlighting the ordinary person and their ways of dealing with situations and their daily struggles. Through his fictional characters, he never failed to portray how the minds of different people think and act in different situations. Aniket has undoubtedly shown an authentic tribute by resembling all the titles with real-life scenarios. I hope such creativity comes to light more often, and we someday fight and win against the COVID through science, technology, art, creativity. The awareness should spread across the globe using only these parameters and nothing else.
