On August 14, the day of Pakistan’s Independence Day, a woman was assaulted and groped at Lahore’s Greater Iqbal park as she was making a video with her friends. In broad daylight, more than 400 men tore the women’s clothes and brutally assaulted her.

In a statement to the police, the woman said, “I was hurled in the air. They assaulted me brutally.” The footage of the assault was captured on many videos, which went viral. A wave of anger and disgust rose in the people of Pakistan and elsewhere. The Lahore police have opened cases against these 400 unidentified men.

Pakistan’s information minister, Fawad Chaudhry, said that the arrests were being made and that the Prime minister has also taken notice of the case. Prime Minister Imran Khan was earlier trolled for saying that women are to be blamed for the assaults that happen to them since men are not robots and can’t control themselves.

However, he later apologized and said that he could never say such a thing as women are respected in Islamic countries. The woman also said that her friends called 15 (an emergency line), but no response. Women have been fighting against violence, safety, and the patriarchal system for ages in Pakistan and have been oppressed for taking a stand for themselves.

The more terrifying thing was, apart from those 400 people who groped her, others just stood in the crowd watching and taking videos. No one except for one person came forward to help her. More than that, there were underage kids too in the crowd who were shouting and supporting these men.

This incident has created more fear amongst Pakistani women and young girls. So many people watched the woman lose her dignity on Independence Day just because she was making a video. So many people, including celebrities, ministers, etc, raised their voices and came in support of this woman. However, there are still people out there who are blaming the victim. It’s high time that society changes its mindset and stops victim-blaming
