Polling for election to the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) began on a slow note on September 3.

Rohini Somanakatti is the youngest candidate in the fray for the HDMC polls. Rohini hails from a typical, conservative middle-class family and is presently working as a contract executed in a nationalized bank and earning Rs 20,000 per month.

Rohini recounts how as a child, she could experience firsthand the paucity of services in her city. The roads were full of potholes, and medical facilities were lacking. In spite of extracting a hefty tax from the public, the authorities could not bring a plausible change in the living conditions of the residents of Hubbali.

Rohini recounts how she got into politics. After watching an advertisement from the Aam Aadmi Party for membership, Rohini met AAP national leader Romi Bhati and other leaders two months ago. After a thorough interview, the party chose her to contest in the HDMC poll.
Rohini’s father works at a kitchen utensils shop, and her mother is a homemaker.

Romi Bhati, AAP’s Karnataka in-charge, said, “We have encouraged many youngsters, who have a vision for development. Rohini is the youngest contestant from AAP, after Payal Patel, 22, in Surat. During the interview, we observed the spark in Rohini and her out-of-the-box ideas for the city’s development. Hence we chose her as our candidate for the civic polls.

Santosh Nargund, Dharwad district in-charge, said AAP had issued tickets to eight youths aged below 30.
