Gartang Gali, a 150-year old skywalk in Nelong valley that opened after 60-years has been defaced by the tourists who engraved their names on the railings made by Sheesham wood or spit guthkas.

On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj spoke to Manoj Dixit, District Magistrate of Uttarkashi and directed him to lodge an FIR against the culprits after a video of youngsters was emerged standing at the edge of the bridge and performing stunts at the height of 11,000ft violating the norms.

This bridge was closed after the 1962 India-China war due to security reasons and has been opened after 60-years. The repair works of the skywalk costing 64lakhs was opened for tourists on August 23.

About 500 tourists have visited this skywalk but it was defaced within a fortnight. This skywalk falls under the jurisdiction of Gangotri National Park (GNP) who have now filed a complaint in writing to Uttarkashi police against those violators. As Superintendent of police of Uttarkashi Manikant Mishra told TOI a case would be registered soon.

The park’s administration has deployed guards to spread in the area and keep an eye on the people creating hooliganism at the bridge. This bridge was built by Pathans from Peshawar as one of the routes for reaching Tibet from India.

Local residents also expressed their anger saying that the vandalism that occurred at the skywalk is very disappointing and these hooligans should be found and punished by the authorities. Deputy director of GNP, RN Pandey has said that they are going through the videos on the internet to catch the culprits.
