On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated he spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this context, Zelensky’s tweet came just hours after Russia applauded India’s choice to withdraw from voting at a UN Security Council meeting. For the third day in a row, the Kremlin has escalated its onslaught against Ukraine, with its sights set on Kyiv, the country’s capital.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) also stated the two leaders’ meeting. Modi expressed his great sorrow for the loss of human lives due to the ongoing unrest and reiterated his plea for an “instant end of aggression and a return to the discussion,” according to a statement released by the PMO. He also reiterated India’s willingness to help with peace efforts in every way possible.
In addition, the PM expressed India’s serious concerns about the safety and security of Indian citizens in Ukraine, including students. He requested Ukrainian authorities’ assistance in expediting the safe departure of the Indian people.
India abstained from voting on a United Nations Security Council resolution proposed by the United States on Friday that “strongly condemns” Russia’s “aggressive behavior” against Ukraine, calls for an immediate withdrawal of violence and hostilities, and implies that discussions are the “only approach” to settling disputes.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, had spoken to Jaishankar before the key vote and offered his view of the present situation in Ukraine. According to the external affairs minister, India’s stand on negotiation and discussion is the way forward. A significant number of Indians are trapped in the war-torn country, with many pleading for help to flee, despite the government’s best efforts to transfer Indian citizens out via alternate ways following the closing of Ukraine’s airspace.
A flight is expected to arrive in Mumbai soon.
