History of “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace”

UN established the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in 2013. April 6th was the day, that was originally used to celebrate physical activity in the world. The selection of this day was based on the fact that it coincides with the first day of the first Olympic Games in 1896. Due to the vast reach of sports, it is in position to contribute towards peace.

The theme of “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace”

The global theme is Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport. This day creates an opportunity to promote the use of sport. Under this theme, the UN headquarters in New York will recognise the role of the sport to address the climate crisis. Also, it will highlight actions to lower the emission of greenhouse gases to weaken climate change.
