The “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace” (IDSDP) takes place annually on 6 April. It celebrates the contribution of sports to health, education and lifestyle. It is an annual celebration to bring a social change through the power of sport. Sport is a powerful tool to change the world and strengthen social ties. By all means, it provides an opportunity to recognise positive role of sports.

History of “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace”
UN established the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in 2013. April 6th was the day, that was originally used to celebrate physical activity in the world. The selection of this day was based on the fact that it coincides with the first day of the first Olympic Games in 1896. Due to the vast reach of sports, it is in position to contribute towards peace.
The theme of “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace”
The global theme is Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport. This day creates an opportunity to promote the use of sport. Usually, the sports, here, is a tool for human rights and sustainable development. Under this theme, the UN headquarters in New York will recognise the role of the sport to address the climate crisis. Also, it will highlight actions to lower the emission of greenhouse gases to weaken climate change.

You can watch a movie that shows the value of sports in development and peace. Take a picture while playing any sport and post it on social media platforms. You can participate in friendly matches organised in your peer groups. Take part in some sporting events organised for underprivileged kids like KidSport or Right to Play International.
