US ambassador to India, Nancy J Powell made a sudden announcement of her exit before May end on Monday, April 01, 2014.
This means that after the General Elections, once a new government is in place a new person would be incharge of the position to take care of the Indo-US relations which took a beating in the past year.
A press release by the US embassy, stated that Powell has submitted her resignation to President Barack Obama. Powell had planned this for some time and she will retire to her home in Delaware.
Powell, arrived on April 19, 2012 to India as the first woman US ambassador to occupy Roosevelt House which is the residence of the ambassador. Her tenure is saw the worst of Indo-US ties in recent times, when New Delhi reciprocated by taking away some privileges of embassy diplomats in response to the arrest and strip-search of Indian diplomat in US, Devyani Khobragade.
Powell is going for retirement and not resigning from her position as per US embassy. Washington plans to bring in new faces to start with a clean slate with the new Indian government. Besides the Khobragade issue, Indo-US ties have also been strained over patents for low-cost medicines also.
