Toyota recalls 40k units of Innova in India

About 44,989 units of Toyota Innova manufactured between February 2005 and December 2008 in India are recalled today to rectify a faulty cable on the steering wheel.

This a part of a global recall of 6.39 million vehicles by the Japanese major Toyota Motor Corp. These range across 25 models for many defects, including the faulty cable on the steering wheel, engine starters, seat rails and windshield wiper motors.

The Indian counterpart of world’s largest car manufacturer, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said that the campaign to recall has been announced due to an error in the spiral cable mounted on the steering wheel. TKM is a joint venture between Toyota and India’s Kirloskar group.

The fault which leads to continuous glowing of the airbag warning lamp on the instrument cluster in addition also deactivates the driver’s airbag. The statement said that Toyota is working on obtaining the replacement parts. Hence customers will be contacted by the Toyota dealers once the parts are available.

Customers will not be charged for the repair and it is expected to take about one hour for every vehicle, it said. Toyota expressed regret for the ‘inconvenience’.

This is the second biggest recall by Toyota worldwide after the 7.43 million recall in October 2012 to fix faulty power window switches. Recently Maruti Suzuki India also had a recall of about 1 lakh units to replace a faulty fuel tank part in the compact sedan Dzire.
