Jacques Kallis calls it quits; End of an era of cricketing brilliance

One of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, Jacques Kallis, has decided to retire from ODIs, marking his departure from all international forms of cricket. With the ICC Cricket World Cup just months away, Kallis decided not to be part of the biggest tournament in the sport and finished his International career with a 2-1 win over Sri Lanka on home turf.

According to a ToI report on July 31, Kallis, who had planned his retirement after the World Cup, decided to call it quits after he failed to impress in his last series. The three match series brought the win for South Africa but Kallis has been struggling with just five runs accumulated from three innings.

In a statement, Kallis was quoted saying that his dream of being a part of the World Cup squad seemed too far during the series at Sri Lanka. He also wished the South Africa team for the 2015 and expressed his confidence over the current team bringing the World Cup to South Africa.

In a thanking note, he conveyed his gratitude for the support of everyone in his career including Cricket South Africa and the team. He mentioned that he would be available for the domestic cricket where he plays for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League of Australia and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

The cricketing world sees his retirement as a set back and players shared the same view by taking it on to the social media.  ICC Chief Executive David Richardson acknowledged the player for his contribution and said Kallis would remain an inspiration for the aspiring youngsters.

Kallis leaves the international cricketing world leaving a footmark of his own. Having scored 17 centuries, Kallis accumulated 11,574 runs and 273 wickets in the limited over formats. He marked his retirement from Test Cricket in December last year after having credited 45 centuries to his name, next only to Sachin Tendulkar with 51 centuries.
