Overview

Bangladesh are off the mark in ODIs this year, after recording their first win in 2014 on Friday against Zimbabwe in the first of five games.

Although Zimbabwe barely put up a fight, despite not having to field second in the overwhelming evening dew, Bangladesh would be glad to have gotten the monkey off their back.

The Tigers’ skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza, who also recorded his first win after being brought back as captain, said his team are not relaxing.

“We are not relieved with the first win,” he said, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo. “This is our job. We come to the field every day to win, we train every day to win. We have won our first match this year. It would be great if we can win all the matches. There is no room to relax or be relieved. We have to finish our job properly.”

Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura, meanwhile, urged his team to bounce back.

“It’s always tough to play in Bangladesh, but there are still four more games to play,” he said. “The next game is important so we need to bounce back as a team and try and level the series 1-1 before we go to Dhaka [for the final three games].”

The start of the remaining day-night matches has been advanced by an hour, to 12:30 p.m. local time, to reduce the effect of the dew, a move that was welcomed by both sides.

Squads

Key players

Bangladesh

Shakib al Hasan is the man of the hour after becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer, and 12th overall, to hit a century and take four wickets in the same game. Shakib’s 101 off 99 balls was his first hundred in over four years. The all-rounder is well capable of single-handedly winning games for his team.

Zimbabwe

While Brendan Taylor top-scored for Zimbabwe with 54 off 72 balls in the first ODI, Hamilton Masakadza was also looking good during his 48-ball 42. However, the visitors will be hoping other players also turn up as it will require a team effort to get back in the series.
