‘Joementum’ Has Arrived and It’s Propelling Democrats to Victory

President Joe Biden

Despite all the exuberant predictions from the Right, Democrats aren’t in disarray. Far from it.

Right now, according to recent polling average updates for Senate races, Democrats are ahead in Ohio, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. This week, a joint poll conducted by YouGov and The Economist had Democrats up by five over Republicans on a generic ballot.

It’s time to call this what it is: Joementum.

The Joementum emanating from the White House is being propelled by the multiple bills President Biden signed into law in the last few months. These accomplishments have changed the game for the Democrats, after Republicans spent the last year gleefully predicting a red tsunami in the November elections.

That’s looking less and less likely, thanks to the President’s record of astonishing accomplishments of late. These include passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which takes significant action against climate change, cuts prescription drug costs, lowers health care and energy costs, gives incentives for buying electric vehicles, reduces the deficit, and creates jobs.

Let’s not forget the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which sent over 160 million checks to Americans, extended unemployment insurance, helped fund small businesses, and created jobs.

And the Bipartisan Infrastructure law provided billions in funding to repair our roadways and bridges, as well as for upgrades to power grids and airports, expanded internet access, funding public transit, and delivering cleaner water.

The President also had another recent bipartisan success with the CHIPS and Science Act, which has already generated billions in commitments for domestic computer chip manufacturing and creating jobs.

None of these accomplishments were a foregone conclusion. There is little margin of error in the House and Senate to pass bills, given how slim the Democrats’ majority is.

If Democrats can clearly remind the American people of all that they have accomplished over the last two years, they have a chance at not only holding the House, but expanding the Senate.

Democrats need to pound home the message as simply as possible: Jobs, jobs, jobs. As James Carville might say, keep it simple, stupid.

Democrats have succeeded with all of this in addition to fighting COVID-19 head on, passing gun violence prevention measures, expanding health care, and rebuilding America’s standing on the international stage.

Then there’s the question of abortion, something large numbers of Americans say will be a motivating factor in who they vote for come November. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Republicans have been making strides to restrict access to abortion, something that’s deeply unpopular with the American people and creating a wind in the sails of Democrats, the side committed to protecting bodily autonomy for all Americans.

With former President Donald Trump in serious legal trouble, all of this adds up into the perfect formula for Democrats to buck the trend of losing majorities in Congress while holding the White House.

We can’t shrink from the truth: Republicans are worse than we ever imagined—or exactly as bad as you always thought, depending on where you’ve been.

But the election can’t be won solely based on all of the horrible things Republicans have done, or the fact that the GOP has no clear plan for anything but destruction. This election must be about reminding the American people what’s been accomplished by Democrats, and how much more could be done if Democrats had more time in the majority.

Thanks to Joementum and the amazing list of accomplishments the Democrats have to run on, this is the Democrat’s election to lose. And with it, we would lose our democracy, our commitment to truth, and our hope never to have Trump in the White House again.

That’s a nightmare not worth repeating.

It’s on Democrats to finish strong, but it’s on the American people to actually vote for them.

Heed the Joementum. It’s a sign of all that’s to come if the Democrats succeed in November. And that depends on you.
