Stimulus Checks Dec. 2022: San Fransisco Announces [GIFT] Guaranteed Income Program For Low-Income Transgenders

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced on Wednesday in a series of tweets that the city would venture a new 18-month guaranteed income program for low-income transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and intersex residents in the city.

Guaranteed Income for Transgender People (G.I.F.T.) will provide economically marginalized transgender people with unrestricted, monthly guaranteed income as a way to combat poverty our most impacted community members face.

The Transgender District and Lyon-Martin Community Health Services, in partnership with municipal city departments in the City and County of San Francisco, will provide 55 Transgender residents of San Francisco County with $1,200 a month in guaranteed income for a year and a half. The program will prioritize enrollment of Transgender, Non-Binary, Gender Non-Conforming, and Intersex (TGI) people who are also Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), experiencing homelessness, living with disabilities and chronic illnesses, youth and elders, monolingual Spanish-speakers, and those who are legally vulnerable such as TGI people who are undocumented, engaging in survival sex trades, or are formerly incarcerated.

The GIFT program is part of the City’s larger effort to offer temporary income as a way to address poverty. It’s the first in the country to focus on transgender communities and is now accepting applications through Dec 15, 2022: https://t.co/Wk8VjygZ5z

A statement by the city of San Francisco added that “GIFT is one of several programs the City is developing, implementing, and evaluating to identify how to best support San Francisco residents and promote economic stability and recovery.”

“‘GIFT’ is really what it is spelling out – it’s a gift. What it isn’t is a good long-term solution to remove poverty.”

Applications for GIFT will be accepted through late December.
