The US Congress approved the first of 3 direct stimulus checks to Americans in 2020; the final one was distributed in March 2021. Since then, there have been several calls for further stimulus, but the American administration has abandoned any plans for a fourth payment.
Inflation In 2021 And 2022
But as inflation exploded in 2021 and 2022, many states picked up the cause and started giving their citizens credits and payments. Each state established its payout amount and eligibility requirements referred to as anything from tax rebates to middle-class refunds.
Unfortunately, most payouts came from states around the two coastlines, which are designated as Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Illinois Stimulus Check
In 2023, Illinois residents may get up to two additional payments from the state. The first payment is a refund of $50 for single filers and $100 for joint filers’ income taxes. To be eligible, you must reside in Illinois and have an adjusted gross income of $200,000 or $400,000 for joint filers in 2021.
A $300 property tax rebate is the second payment. This covers only registered property owners. To be eligible, you must reside in Illinois and have paid property taxes on a primary dwelling you owned in 2020 in 2021. Your taxable income must be less than $250,000 to qualify for this rebate.
Indiana started issuing tax refunds in May 2022, starting at $125 for single filers and $250 for joint filers. Although there was no minimum income requirement, residents must submit their Indiana state tax forms for 2020 and 2021. Even though some Midwestern states like Iowa never even attempted the inflation relief check game, others like Kansas tried but frequently failed due to legislative opposition.
The only other Midwestern state to make payouts was Minnesota, which did so in the form of $488 payouts for frontline employees in 2022. But Yahoo Finance reports that the deadline for requesting those payments has gone long since.
