Andaman and Nicobar Island has a great amount of significance when it comes to the Indian Ocean region and currently, India is planning to build a naval base at Andaman and Nicobar. It will provide India with a great advantage in that region.
Significance of Andaman and Nicobar island
Nicobar Island has great significance in geopolitical strategies, not only because it is located in the Indian Ocean but also because it is very close to the Malacca Strait.
Almost 60% of the world’s trade gets past this strait, and 65% of China’s oil export also passes through the Malacca Strait.
India’s strategy to plan a naval base
India already has a tri-service command at the great Nicobar and now planning to build a naval base shows that India wants to tighten its grip on the Indian Ocean.
Having several issues in the northeast region currently with China, this plan could also be to counter China in the Indian Ocean region. Incidents from Galwan valley, the Tawang region and currently a spy ship at Hambantota port have heated things between these two nations.
