All 16 ski people who got swept away by an avalanche on Saturday, April 8, in Switzerland’s Valais region’s Saas Fee Valley have been found alive.
The Incident
Sixteen ski tourers were lost in a significant avalanche above Saas Fee on Saturday morning. Eight people were injured, among which one was in critical condition. Six helicopters and quite a few rescuers were able to prevent the worst.
According to Valais cantonal police spokespersons, the emergency services were promptly on the scene after receiving a 144 alert at 10:33 a.m.
As per La Libre, Five of the eight injured were flown to Sion Hospital, while three were sent to Visp Hospital. The rescuers pointed out that since not everyone was entirely buried by the snow, all the victims could be rescued alive.
Air Zermatt had already presented a preliminary report that listed two injuries. There was no information available on the skiers’ nationality or age.
Additionally, three people were evacuated from the summit of Alphubel, where the incident occurred above Saas Fee, to stop more avalanche-related accidents.
About ten avalanche dog handlers, personnel of the Saas rescue station, Saas Fee mountain train employees, and firefighters from Saas Fee, Saas-Almagell, and Saas- Grund formed the rescue teams.
Avalanches-High Altitude Terror
In Switzerland, there have been 100 documented avalanches annually during the previous 20 years. Avalanches claim the lives of 23 individuals on average every year; 90% of them are on open mountainous terrain while snowboarding, skiing, or backcountry touring on skis or snowshoes.
Even with low danger, caution is still recommended, particularly when attendance is expected to be high. Even at level 2, deadly avalanches are still possible.
